About Us - Carrie Peters Working with Sustainable Design

|
As a native Northern Californian, Carrie spent her early childhood playing in the
fennel fields of undeveloped land and beaches south of San Francisco. Surrounded
by her Mother’s sense of color and pattern with drawers overflowing with textiles,
she developed an early admiration for fabrics and color.
Before receiving the inspiration to create Raksha Bella, Carrie was a decorative painter,
working primarily as an artisan with her hands. For more than 10 years her occupation as
a painter paralleled her passion as a professional modern dancer. While completing her MA
in Art in New Mexico, she continued to work as an artist both with painting and dancing.
Patterns, repetition, set design, color and texture and its influence on the human experience
was an ongoing passion for her in both fields.
Gaining new awareness on the issue of toxicity in paints, Carrie was one of the first in
her industry working with eco-friendly, low and no VOC paints. Returning to school for
architecture and design, she continued to explore sustainable home materials and began to
focus on cotton and textiles.
While on a trip to India to visit her spiritual teacher, a recipient of the UN Gandhi King
award for World Peace in 2002, Carrie fell in love with the country and its well-known
artisan culture. The handcrafted, delicately woven textiles and ornate woodworking resonated
with her deeply, catapulting her return to the states and the launch of Raksha Bella.
She lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband Matt and daughter Raphaella.
